West Sussex, with its small towns and villages, nestles in an area of outstanding natural beauty and has much to offer for either a short break or a longer stay.

The Cathedral town of Chichester was founded by the Romans around AD70 who laid out the main street plan and built the original city walls, which were rebuilt in flint in medieval times. The harbour area, with its 50 miles of shoreline, provides a natural habitat for a wide variety of birds, flora and fauna.

To the north of West Sussex are the historic market towns of Midhurst and Petworth. Midhurst has a rich heritage of half-timbered buildings, 17th and 18th century houses, shops and pubs. Petworth, although smaller, retains its ancient charm with historic buildings.

Along the coastline the seaside towns of Bognor Regis and Worthing offer clean beaches and all the traditional seaside entertainment. Nearby Arundel is a peaceful town, which nestles below the battlements of one of the most impressive castles in the county.

For walkers, the South Downs Way has a host of breathtaking areas of outstanding natural beauty, from the woodlands and chalk downlands north of Chichester to the atmospheric harbour, nature reserves and coastline to the south.
