Clevedon's Georgian, Regency and Victorian buildings provide an architectural history book of the town's development from a small fishing village to a fashionable 19th-century resort.
Undoubtedly its centrepiece is the recently restored Victorian pier ? justly known as one of the finest in the country. Steamship cruises, promenading and fishing have once again become popular pier pleasures.
At its landward end is the Toll House Gallery and Tourist Information Centre. Open every day, it's the ideal starting point for the visitor, with interesting souvenirs and memorabilia, exhibitions of work by local artists and, of course, friendly advice and information.
Around a mile inland, nestling below Court Hill, is the magnificent 14th-century mansion of Clevedon Court. Since 1790 it has been home to the Elton family who were responsible for planning much of Clevedon and for bringing wealth and fame to the area.
Notable visitors invited to Clevedon by the Eltons included Thackeray (who wrote much of Vanity Fair at Clevedon Court), Coleridge and Tennyson. Tread in their footsteps and see the source of their inspiration on Poet's Walk with its fine Channel and Mendip views.
