Honiton,
one of the 'gateways' to Devonshire, is situated in the south-east of
the county and is a pleasant market town. Once one of the centres of the
West Country's medieval cloth trade it later became famous for its lace.
You can see the World's principal collection of Honiton Lace at the town's
museum and you'll find many shops specialising in lace and pottery, as
well as antiques for which Honiton is now renowned.
Agriculture is Honiton's main industry, it stands in rich farmland and
is watered by the river Otter with steep sided-hills that rise between
the town and the sea. For nature enthusiasts there are numerous miles
of footpaths offering fantastic walking and rambling opportunities.
Many of Honiton's older buildings were destroyed in the 18th century by
fires, however the rebuilding created a unique town, which is still largely
18th century. It is now an attractive and prosperous town, an excellent
shopping centre with a twice-weekly street market and has good sport and
recreation facilities.
With an extensive selection of restaurants, cafes and wide choice of accommodation
from luxury hotels, guest houses and farmhouses to self catering cottages,
