beginning to relax. The beautiful hills and valleys or Exmoor and Dartmoor
National Parks are just waiting to be explored. Walking and cycling are

all ages and abilities.
The largest town in this delightful area is Tiverton. Situated on the
River Exe the town's fascinating history, which includes the local lace
and textile industry, can be discovered in the award-winning museum. Tiverton
has excellent shopping facilities and holds a pannier market three days
each week.
It was in the late 1700s when mill owners from the industrialised areas
of northern England, attracted by the many fast flowing Devon rivers,
brought their textile, fabric and lace making skills south and set up
businesses. Many of the magnificent country homes and gardens built by
those early industrialists are now open to the public.
Just a little to the south east of Tiverton is the market town of Cullompton.
During 1839 a fire burnt down much of the town but Victorian additions
to the town's structure actually blend well with the few surviving Georgian
houses. A quiet town, Cullompton has an imposing parish church which is
well known for its magnificent roof.
There are numerous small towns and villages in this part of Devon. Many
have curious names such as Zeal Monachorum, Woofardisworthy and Morchard
Bishop, which has the longest continuous row of thatched cottages in Devon.
The town of Crediton owes its fame to St Boniface. Born in the town around
680AD he was one of the founders of the Christian church in Europe. Crediton
was made the seat of the first bishop of Devon and Cornwall and the town's
cathedral-sized church is still dominant. For those with an interest in
country churchyards Devon's towns and villages have many fascinating churches,
each with its own unique history.
