Southampton
is at the heart of one of the world's premier regions for sailing and watersports
and boasts some of the best marina facilities and support
services on the south coast. World yachting's governing body, the International
Sailing Federation, is now established in the city. Southampton hosts the annual
Southampton International Boatshow, and is also home to two of the world's most
prestigious ocean races, which receive extensive national coverage.
Local attractions
for visitors include the waterfront and the Old Town with its museums and walks
around the old city walls. A permanent display of Titanic memorabilia is on display
in the city's Maritime Museum. The city is also home to an award-winning art gallery,
and the Guildhall regularly hosts major musical acts. Local entertainment, including
theatres, cinemas and a growing nightlife consisting of bars, restaurants and
clubs, make Southampton the place to visit all year round. The New Forest, Winchester,
and Bournemouth's beaches are all within easy reach by car or train and Red Funnel
operate a regular ferry service to the Isle of Wight. |
