Visitors
to Axminster are often surprised to find a small, ancient market town surrounded
by beautiful countryside, yet with many of the amenities they expect from
a larger town.
The new swimming pool, sports complex and modern supermarkets are positioned
away from the town centre, enabling it to retain its special character.
The layout of the town, with the church of St Mary The Virgin and the Minster
Green at its heart, displays its Saxon origins. The church, which is the
oldest building in Axminster, enshrines the history of the town.
During the summer months, Axminster brings art and entertainment to the
centre of the town and, throughout the year, excellent productions - both
amateur and professional - are staged at the Guildhall, along with occasional
exhibitions and craft fairs.
Thursday is market day, when farmers come to buy and sell at the livestock
auction. Visitors are fascinated by the speed of the auctioneer's tongue!
Also on Thursday there is a general market in the town square, where you
may find a bargain or two.
The shops offer friendly, old-fashioned service and you can enjoy a snack
at one of the welcoming pubs or cafes. Internationally-known Axminster Carpets
and Axminster Power Tools both have showrooms in the centre of the town,
where you can buy or simply browse.
Conveniently situated some five miles inland from the attractive seaside
towns of Seaton and Lyme Regis, Axminster makes a perfect touring centre
from which to explore the unspoilt coast and countryside, with its many
quaint old villages, and the keen walker will be tempted by many a beckoning
sign. |
