Dorset has so much to offer the discerning holidaymaker from the exciting
larger resorts of Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth to smaller relaxing
picturesque such as Lyme Regis and Swanage. Whilst inland in the Dorset
countryside you'll find charming country towns, Dorchester, Wimborne,
Beaminster, Shaftesbury and Sherbourne to name but a few. Much of the
Dorset coastline has recently received UNESCO World Heritage Coast status
and is sometimes called The Jurassic Coast due to its rich Jurassic outcrops
and fossil beds.
For
those with a love of Hardy's works, rural Dorset will always be regarded
as the focal point of his writings.Hardy was
born and bred in the county and many of his great works were written here,
based on the towns and villages that he knew and loved, re-christened
with such poignant names as 'Casterbridge' and 'Budmouth'.
A visit to Dorset takes you to many of these towns and villages
where you will find settings little changed from the days of Hardy's great
novels. Inland, much of the county remains rural with market towns and
picture-postcard villages never far away from many interesting country
houses, gardens and visitor attractions.
The old Roman county town of Dorchester,
with its fascinating county museum, Roman amphitheatre and weekly market, is just one
of the many splendid country towns that Dorset has to offer. Along with
other picturesque country towns like Shaftesbury and Blandford in North
Dorset, Sherbourne and Beaminster in West
Dorset, Wareham and the historic village of Corfe Castle in Purbeck and Wimborne to the east they make excellent days out if your taking
a holiday on the coast or are in themselves superb places to stay if your
idea of a perfect holiday is to relax in rural surroundings or discover
the local countryside on foot, bicycle or horseback.
Dorset's
coastline presents a fine selection of resorts, both large and small.
All offer many interesting places to visit which include museums, aquariums
and heritage centres.Traditional
resorts such as Weymouth, Lyme
Regis, Swanage, Bournemouth and Poole have changed dramatically over the past few years and now offer all those
extras you'll now expect on seaside holiday whilst still retaining the
seaside charm of years gone by. Whilst Christchurch to the far east of the Dorset coast offers the combined benefits of a
seaside town on the edge of the rural beauty of the New Forest in the
neighboring county of Hampshire.
The
Dorset coastline is quite simply stunning, from Poole Harbour in the east,
the largest natural harbour in Europe, through to the magnificent cliffs
and picturesque bays of the Isle of Purbeck and the rich geological coastline
stretching from Portland to Lyme
Regis where in many parts fossils from the Jurassic era abound.
The outstanding
stretch of coast from Swanage to Lyme Regis has recently been awarded
World Heritage Coast status ranking it amongst such places as the Grand
Canyon and Great Barrier Reef in environmental importance.
